I love buying from reptile stores because they sell mice of every life stage. I purchased a newly weaned mouse for like a few cents! I lied to the manager and said that the mouse was for my hungry red tail boa back at homeDid you buy your pet mouse or rat from a reptile feed store?
I don't like buying feeder rats because I feel like I'm just keeping them in stock and they are more likely to have diseases, genetic disorders etc.
I did have pet mice as a child though that were feeders. I've always had a bleeding heart for little critters and it's really sad that they're bred to be eaten. I think snakes are great too but I don't think they should be kept as pets in most cases and I could never bring home a live rodent to feed one after having and loving rats so much.
Generally, it's not the best idea to buy pets from feeder stock. They have not been necessarily kept clean and healthy like pets have been. They will not have been socialized in any way nor have they been allowed the best home for healthy growth and development.
Feeder stock rodents are typically kept 20-30 in a tank. That is WAY to small an area for healthy growth! Rodents bred as pets will generally be healthier and more friendly.Did you buy your pet mouse or rat from a reptile feed store?
I bought a mouse to feed my snake from a store who sold them as feeders; and it died three days after [ and two days short of when I was suppost to have fed it to my python ]. However, I had begun to take a liking to it before it died and wished to keep it, so I went back for another mouse- one I would keep and got a pregnant female. She had no mother skills whatsoever. I'm begining to think they might be inbred too much to keep long. Plus- they were so much more expensive there then another store from which I got healthy, long lasting mice.
I have a corn snake, and I do buy from the feeder selection.. but I have also had a change of heart on a couple that were too friendly to be eaten.. and I kept them as pets. lol. I've also gotten rats from the feeder store for specific use as pets, and the owner knew it, but didn't care. As long as the rodents keep on moving, they don't mind if you're buying for pets or food.. with the exception of Fancy mice and rats; these are typically NOT for food use!
PS-- I always buy my mice an hour before feeding time.. otherwise, I'll wind up with another pet!Did you buy your pet mouse or rat from a reptile feed store?
Its nice to save the rats and mice but if you wanna buy a pet I recommend buying from a individual. Because I bought two pet rats from a pet store and they weren't very friendly, so when they had babies, I handled them from day one and I wouldn't take anything for them. Individuals usually take better care of the babies and handle them so your getting a sweet and gentle baby. My two boys absolutly love me to death.
No, but my rats were actually feeder rats. I got them when they were little too, just not as young as your mouse. It must be adorable!!
And they were extremely friendly and lived for three years.
