How popular were ventriloquist dolls in the 1700s?

I did some research and found that they were used during the Ancient times until the Church condemned them, stating it was witchcraft and stuff until around the 18th-19th century.

My question is: How popular were they? Was it possible for one to pick them up in a doll store (or their equivalent of one) or were they reserved for stage performers only?

Thanks. :)|||That is very interesting and i would of never thought they would even of been around that long ago' and witchcraft oh my..If you had one blue eye and a green one would you be burned too.Or if the little kids said they saw you talking to a cat' would you too be Burnt at the stake..Scary times..
