Will I need a Blood Transfusion because of my Anemia?

Ive recently been diagnosed with anemia. My iron stores are low and Ive been prescribed iron tablets. My doctor said that I'm a 5 but should be between 15-300. I know if it gets too low people have transfusions. I was just wondering if anyone knew what level it had to reach to get to that stage? Will I need a Blood Transfusion because of my Anemia?
Pabicoch - More information is needed since anemia could be diagnosed by different red blood cell tests such as hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell count, and serum iron. Your "5" is very close to a severely anemic hemoglobin. A normal hemoglobin range might be from 11 to 16 grams per deciliter. First your doctor needs to discover why you're anemic to determine the best treatment. It could all be to severe iron deficiency or loss of blood, With a "5" patient's often feel very weak and may be often out-of-breath. Initially red blood cell transfusion of packed red cells might be given, depending upon your symptoms - possibly along with iron by mouth or by injection,
Most doctors will try medications and iron supplements BEFORE a transfusion is used, for two reasons.

1) A transfusion is temporary. Your blood only lasts for about 90 days. Normally, your body would replace it, but in your case you would need another transfusion every three months

2) Transfusions have many dangers, including a few disease (although our blood supply is VERY well check), allergies, and clots. Transfusions are MUCH more dangerous than medication.

The doctor should first try iron supplement, which should bring you up to about an 8 -- tiring, but livable. The doctor may also ask you to change your diet to include iron-rich foods such as red meat, liver, and green leafy vegetables.

In REALLY tough case the doctor might recommend a hormone called EPO. BEWARE -- this stuff is VERY expensive (like $10,000 a month), and most insurance companies WON'T pay for it.

The secret is to find the CAUSE of the anemia, and fix it. You could have several hormonal problems, endocrine problems, and even kidney disease. It may take a LOT of testing to eliminate possible causes and settle on one course of treatment. Will I need a Blood Transfusion because of my Anemia?
Blood transfusions should only be given when there is active bleeding or symptoms of anemia such as tachycardia, hypotension, syncope etc. If you can function at a hemoglobin of 5 (I assume when you say you are a 5 that you are referring to your hemoglobin level) then you don't need a transfusion. There are usually more risks to transfusion than benefits. Aside from infections and inflammation, transfused blood is not fresh and therefore does not work as well as your own.
Well generally we don't do blood transfusions unless you've lost a lot of blood or have very severe anemia. Iron supplements are usually what is given and a repeat blood test is given later on. Transfusions are extreme measures that we would take because everytime we transfuse, it carries the risk of blood-borne diseases and immune reactivity with the donor blood.

EDIT: Lasix for anemia? You are by far the most idiotic bot I've seen on here. Will I need a Blood Transfusion because of my Anemia?
Usually you don't get blood transfusions when its Iron deficiency anemia, For Anemic people its usually a liquid shot of iron in the butt.

Usually Blood transfusion is used when your body can't create blood cells quick enough. Also if for some reason you get one, its because your body isn't creating enough red cells compared to how much you lose.
