Please don't think MAC is the god of makeup. Its actually the same quality as drugstore crap after Estee Lauder bought the company around 2000. They ruined several classic shades and really toned down the pigments in many of them. If you don't believe me go to a MAC counter and sample several shades. They all look practically the same once you get them out of the tin.

Now that we've cleared that up there are some awesome drugstore secrets. Max Factor is totally a cool brand. Id suggest trying Wet and Wild for eyeliners and lipliners. You can't go too wrong with 99 cent products. I'd suggest trying Maybeline's Great Lash Mascera. Many people have sworn by it for years and it outdoes most of the high end makeup (take that DiorShow!). I really like the Revlon Color Stay products. I only use their eyeliner (even when I'm using tony eyeshadows) and I adore their shadows. They sweep on decently, have a good amount of pigment and come in a decent range of colors.

Whatever cheap brand you use you can always extend the life of by applying concealer to your lid underneath your makeup (I use Colorstay for this part as well because its a great texture. I use Laura Mercier for the rest of my face though).

Buy decent brushes as well. I swear having a good brush makes all of the difference sometimes. I recommend the Japonesque line. They sell them at Nordstroms but you can get them at Ulta for wayyy cheaper. They are about 10 bucks each but should last decades if you shampoo them every few months.

That said normally I'd say the products not to scrimp on are eyeshadow, foundation and concealer but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Always buy cheap lipliner, eyeliner, mascara.

Goodluck and don't buy into the MAC hype. Any real makeup artist won't swear by just one brand. If you do want to try a real quality brand with some funky colors try one of Urban Decay's pallets (like 34 each but will last a long time and have sooo many colors). What iis a good, reasonable brand of make up (preferably eye) for mii to begiin usiing?
