Need advice on building a stage scene?

For VBS this year, I am wanting to build a stage scene to go with the theme. Since we are on a very limited budget, I would love to be able to do it with as little out of pocket as possible. I have read where many people use large pieces of cardboard and just use supports for it to help it stand up. Since many stores will give you their large boxes for free, this is very ideal for us. Any and all advice on building the scene (how to make sure it stands up properly, etc.) would be greatly appreciated especially if you have done one in the past and know that the idea works.

Thanks so much for your help :)Need advice on building a stage scene?
Cardboard might be ok attached to a wood frame, but you should try to get wood for the basic framework of your set pieces. I once did a low-budget production in which the only set pieces were three doorways made out of two-by-fours (scavenged lumber from a building that was being demolished), covered with large swathes of fabric, which also connected the three doorways. They were attached to the frames with staples. Sandbags kept the frames in place. Cost: about $50.Good luck!
