It appears to test experimental equipment for the military.|||within a mile or so of that place, the desert is filled with motion sensors. noone really knows what they do there except the people that do it, and even then their part is only an iode of what the place as a whole does so individuals that work there aren't aloud to talk to employees with other jobs. i also know that MIGS have been spotted flying about the base. however the mig hasn't been used in about 20 years.|||It's an Air Force base where they test experimental aircraft.
It's official location is Groom Lake. Groom Lake used to be a lake, but it dried up centuries ago. Dried lake beds make great runways for airplanes because they're flat and solid from the water pressing down on it.
It's called Area 51 because of the Department of Energy. Back when we were testing atomic bombs, the Department of Energy mapped out the desert for possible atom bomb test sites. They mapped the desert in squares. Each square was given a number: Area 1, Area 2, Area 3, Area 4, etc. The square over Groom Lake just happened to be Area 51.
The U2 plane, SR-71 Blackbird, and the Stealth Fighter were all tested at Area 51.
I believe stolen Migs were also flown there to test their abilities. And yes, Migs are still flying today all over the world.|||If it's so secret why are there aerial photographs of it
